In the 18th century, American women who had "female problems" -- menstrual cramps, or symptoms associated with menopause, such as hot flushes, night sweats, and mood swings -- were treated with a concoction made from the root of the wild yam. In the 21st century, using wild yam is still a good idea. Although this tuberous plant has a long history in folk medicine, its place as a modern-day health treatment is widely recognized.

Wild yam's history includes its being used for conditions such as digestive disorders, arthritis, and abdominal cramps. But in the 1930s, scientists discovered that wild yam (not to be confused with the sweet potato "yam") contains diosgenin, a substance that is remarkably similar to the female hormone progesterone. Although wild yam isn't the only plant that contains this phytochemical, it's the only one that contains amounts significant enough to be of value. When extracted from wild yam, diosgenin can be used to manufacture "natural" progesterone. And that's good news for women.

As a woman ages, her natural supply of progesterone and estrogen gradually diminishes. As she nears menopause, however, progesterone levels typically fall lower than estrogen levels because when the body lacks estrogen, it uses progesterone to produce more estrogen. Additionally, women continue to make estrogen after menopause, as well as getting it through plant estrogens, while production of progesterone stops. Unfortunately, this lopsided distribution of hormones can lead to "estrogen dominance." Symptoms of estrogen dominance are those commonly associated with menopause -- irregular menstrual flow, hot flushes, cramping, mood swings, migraines and insomnia. Estrogen dominance is also associated with bone loss and endometrial problems, including endometrial cancer.

Keeping levels of progesterone and estrogen in balance can prevent these problems, which is why many women opt for hormone replacement therapy (HRT). But HRT has its downside: Recent research indicates that women who use HRT have a higher risk of breast and endometrial cancer -- that's right; HRT may place a woman at risk just as estrogen dominance does. So what's the answer? Use the naturally occurring progesterone found in wild yam, which is much friendlier to women's bodies than synthetic hormones.

Contrary to many other herbal aids that are taken as dietary supplements, wild yam may be most effectively administered as a cream rubbed on to the skin. That's because the diosgenin in wild yam becomes nearly useless when it's processed through the digestive system and liver if taken as a supplement. But when the wild yam cream is rubbed onto the skin, it's quickly absorbed into the bloodstream.

But wild yam isn't just for menopausal symptoms. The natural progesterone derived from wild yam often relieves symptoms of pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), such as water retention, fatigue, migraines, breast soreness and mood swings. It can alleviate menstrual cramps because it has antispasmodic properties. And it's thought to be a viable aid to help prevent osteoporosis, as progesterone stimulates the body to make new bone.
